Traditional Stock Finishing Oil

from $34.95

Our Traditional Stock Oils are formulated from naturally derived oils and waxes in order to get a beautiful traditional English finish on your stock and be able to keep it in top condition.

To maintain a traditionally oil finished stock, shake the bottle of Finishing Oil and rub a very small amount into the timber, avoiding the checkering.  Wipe off the excess and allow to dry.

Our Red Oil is used to enhance the figure, colour and contrast of the beautiful grain of your timber stock and ensure that it looks its best.  It’s made from a traditional recipe that uses the root of the Alkanet plant to give the oil its characteristic blood red appearance.  Alkanet is steeped in Linseed oil for 6 months or more to achieve its depth of colour.

For oil finishing from scratch, make sure any raised timber grain has been smoothed by wetting the stock slightly, letting the grain feel a bit hairy and then sanding smooth with wet and dry sand paper.  Once the stock is properly dry and smooth our Red Oil can be applied and rubbed into the grain to bring out its best characteristics and colour. Make sure to wipe off the excess red oil and allow to dry to a tacky stage before using the Finishing oil.  Rub a very small amount of the finishing oil into the stock and let it almost dry.  When it’s tacky add another very light coat and rub the semi dried oil into the grain to fill it.  Let it partially dry again and repeat the process until the desired finish is achieved.  Once completed, leave the stock in a dust free place to dry for a few weeks to properly cure.  The longer the better.
